A Few Acrylic Works...

I realized I have yet to post some acrylic works. Here are a few details from a series of 6 small paintings (each one is 6" x 6"). I wanted it to portray the idea of rockets being used once then disposed of at sea only to be later relaunched via a whale. Nature is a great recycler!

Always Room For (More) Cake

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Here's my take on Illustration Friday's popular theme of cake. I wanted to draw Hungry Hungry Hippos ever since a $1.50 garage-sale version showed up at work last week. And I had an idea to draw them for last week's I-F's theme of sorry, but ran out of time. But, theme be damned, I was gonna draw those hippos – and here they are. As always, a closer look and the rest of the story can be seen/read here.

Let them eat Scorpions!

This is the latest incarnation for a series of '7' mascot characters I am doing. This specific mascot is the 'SanTan Scorpions'. Scorpions are one of those creatures I look at and immediately think "God has the best portfolio." The whole design of a scorpion is cool. Very scary and intimidating looking and that is the feeling I wanted to capture in my mascot art.

Sketchbook Postcards

A set of postcards designed to encourage people to send sketches rather than words. They are based off of my sketchbook icons posted a while back.

It was fun designing the dividing line on the back of each card. For some reason this is my favorite part of the postcard to design.

I drew a lot of people smoking during the last Drink and Draw. Here's one of the drunken little gems!

Sketchbook romp

random skectches tossed together

Sometimes I just need to relax, so I draw silly little things into my sketchbook. These ones were peppered throughout my book, so I brought them all together on one page for a party. Notice the floating Jean Reno head in the top left corner!

Soaring Vectors - Step by Step Tutorial

I teach a digital illustration class once a week at the local college here in Salem Oregon. Each week I show them how an illustrator goes about creating their artwork. These simple step by steps are provided by the illustrators featured and document their own creative process in an easy to view format. It allows my students and other industry peers to see how various artists work from concept to completion in a variety of styles.

This week I created one I am calling 'Soaring Vectors' which documents a recent sports mascot project I worked on. This weeks download includes '18' step by step images and commentary for each step is thoroughly provided in the Notes.rtf file included. This allows the viewer to print out the notes for future reference and read while viewing each step of the process. You can download the step by step tutorial here. (4.4mb).

I have created numerous step by steps on a variety of projects I've worked on over the past year. Eventually I'll have all available for download soon from a specific web site I am still fine tuning. This will also include all the shared creative processes by other artists too. If you'd like to be featured or share your creative process with my class shoot me an email and I'll tell you what I need. Full credit and links including a small bio is included with each artist featured. At this time approximately 600 creatives in our industry view the weekly content.

PS: Yes I bite my finger nails. Nasty habit I've never been able to break.

Sorry?

Here's my 'sorry' to add to the group. I know it's not really an obvious solution so here's the explanation of how I came up with it.

Blue

I was reminded about a nudity clause with the SFG Blog so I have a replaced the drawing with a link to my blog below. Don't worry, I'm not really concerned or irratated about being censored. I can't stand those people anyway! Rules are rules and I simply forgot. ;)

So basically, I just wanted to sketch more. Produce a drawing in short amount of time in a manner that has nothing to do with my usual "bread and butter" work. I've been doing a one a day now and it's been a wonderful way to experiment.

Work Work Work...

So I've gotten complaints from friends about not posting for the last few weeks, mostly it's cause between work and school I'm pushing 60hrs a week, and then with my current freelance project i'm definately into 80 hrs a week by Sat, and I cant show any of that artwork off yet. So.. I figured I show off stuff from work, it's way different in style than my personal art, but I figured what the hey, better to show off some range. So heres one shirt design I put together for a boys line, what I have here is the entire process, from marker sketch to pencils to inks to final color. Mind you the final color is just one variation I usually have to do 2-3 and on multiple bodies so that means 5-6 color tweaks per revision. Yeah, real fun stuff there, anyhow, great stuff everyone is sharing I'm gonna post comments on other peoples goodies now. :)

Sorry!

My art has gone to the birds!

A couple school mascots I just finished for a design firm in Arizona. Very limited color pallette on both just four spot colors and two of them had to be 'Black' and 'White'. Other limiting factors is the Elementary school mascot could not be very agressive or mean looking. (You know it might scare Jr. and make his Mom upset?) The High School however could be more agressive and have a furrowed brow. All in all they were fun to create. I have about four more I have to do including a 'Scorpion' which should be a lot of fun.

Tree magnifique!

This is something like a 10 minute drawing.
Something like that.

Hello everyone! I was recruited also the famous Jeff here to post some pictures and comments.
So, here goes the first one.

Little introduction of me: I´m Finnish illustrator living and working in Barcelona, Spain. I´ve been doing professionally illustration less than a year now, so I´m still learning the business.
And, yes I´m a male (I´ve got lots of inquiries about my sex).

I thought this piece would be great for the "Super" theme. It´s a super villain that I created some boring day, who gets hit from Superman him self. The Super villain is still untitled, so if you come up with a suitable name for him, I´m all ears.

thanks,
Pietari

Illustration Friday: Sorry

I've been trying to see what I can do with comic strips lately. Here is what I came up with using this week's topic from Illustration Friday: "Sorry".

PUFFY P cuteness

hi all, ive been toiling away at creating a ton of art for the launch of my brand for licensing (PUFFY P) at the Licensing Show in NYC in june. This is my first large trade show, and Im nervous but excited. the brand is mostly aimed at products for kids, teens, tweens, and young women. My goal is to make art so cute that people's heads will explode when looking at it. :)

Heres a few images from my "Princess GlamourPuss" line

the Sorry kid

here's my illustration for the illustrationfriday.com thing. The topic this week was "Sorry"

Ballistic Bovine

I created the film Ballistic Bovine a few years back. It's an odd short film about a cow who has a book 'delivered' to its field. I had a ton of fun making all the illustrations for the film especially the promotional posters and the books that were used as props in the film.

If you have five minutes the film is available here.

Life

An illustration about life according to my vision. An explanatory enumeration:

1: The staircase stands for the many stages of life we go through, from a greenhorn to the last toilsome steps.
2: The helical shape of the stairs is an allegory for our DNA, the blueprint of life.
3: The stairway has no railing, because definitely not everyone reaches the last step without prematurely falling off the stairs.
4: The figure is situated near the side-edge of the staircase, because sometimes you live life on the edge.
5: The staircase stops to reflect the inevitable end. No matter how far you get on the stairway, one day you will have reached the end.
6: Achieving and keeping a steady balance and progress in life is not easy, hence the tightrope-unicycle.
7: Gathering and maintaining love and work is a continuous challenge, hence the juggling.
8: Because the figure is so engaged keeping up with all of life's worries, he doesn't notice that the end is in sight before you know it.
9: Because I think that people often take themselves and life too seriously I gave the figure the nose and mouth of a clown.

All the best,

Metin
