All themed up and nowhere to go.

My usual style is pretty rooted in a brush and ink, 40's comic-meets a woodcut sort of deal. For my self portrait, however, I wanted to do something more painterly. I started off in my normal style and then, in a moment of inspiration, started to paint over it. In the end, I flipped the layers around and placed the lineart atop the realistic value changes. I don't dig it enough to incorporate the change into my daily work, but it was a fun experiment nonetheless.

Vist me here.

Hm...I'm going to swim up stream here.
I really like the inked version...and I really like the painted version...but I don't like the combo of the two. I see that other's do, so please don't listen to me...must just be a taste quirk I have.
Personally, I'd love to see flat color used behind those nice inks.

cheers,

paul

Very cool, as is pretty much everything I've seen from you. In fact, I find your inking process so fascinating, it inspired me to order up a copy of Manga Studio to mess around with. Wish me luck!

Manga Studio is a great program; I'm sure you'll do fine with it!

I can understand the bit of dissenting opinion on the success of the piece. I'd not really done something painterly with brushwork over the top, and I wasn't expecting much success really. They DO tend to compete with eachother!

I love seeing the process behind an illustration, perhaps we could have a day for posting something like this?

Great ink work, I'm really jealous, I love how clean your lines are, how do you achieve that?

I get a lot of inspiration from observing another illustrators process. It's always interesting to me to see the work morph into a finished product. Great work and excellent presentation.

Thank you for sharing.
