Naturally Horsing Around

Here is a book cover I just finished for Storey Publishing. The book offers up detailed information on how to raise and ride horses in a sustainable manner. Because a good part of the book is dedicated to setting up and properly using the natural resources surrounding the horse, I figured creating the horse out of those natural resources felt...well, it just felt natural.

New Work

Our friends over at Golf Digest invited us to tee off on an illustration for Golf Digest’s “INDEX” magazine. Sporting our checkered pants and rhinestone visors, we put the ball on the ground and swung for the fences. This is where we landed.

SFG: Yummy

Here is a doodle I did a while back that fit this week's theme to a tee.

Just thought I'd share some sketches I just finished up for the children's book I'm currently developing.

Bartholomew Hat

The lines are drawn, the colors are chosen, the textures are applied and the coffee pot is empty. The first of twenty spreads is officially complete. And now it’s time for a nap.

Mutt Ink, The Monkey Boys and Tiki Island

The Monkey Boys and Mutt Ink have united their forces to create “Tiki Island”, a concept for a half hour children’s show designed to help kids with conflict/resolution and to help foster respect for different cultures and their beliefs.

Being that this concept is built for TV, the movie might take a bit to download. But no worries... it’s the perfect time to grab some chocolate covered goodies to snack on while you sit back and enjoy our flick. So without further ado... click here to view.

Paste’s Faunomusicology Society

Behold the animal-band kingdom and it’s wonderous variety of herds, hives, breeds and gaggles brought to you by none other than yours truly. The Homo sapiens over at Paste Magazine were in need of “A Field Guide to Animal Bands”. Up to the challenge, we grabbed our gear and ventured out into the land of beastly monikers. And this is what we saw.....

Hello All,

Long time no see. I just got married, so we know how that goes.....the invites have to be stellar. Anywho, it just so happens that this weeks topic fits perfectly with a piece we just finished for Fortune Small Business magazine. The article was about taking a closer look at tax credits for the small business who's research and development programs are influential within their industry.

Cheers,
Mutt Ink

Birds of a feather...

So how do you illustrate the concept of love? How about a triptych…set in a winter’s field…with a wee little bird and her puppet boy?

Prints available at Thumbtackpress.com.

Holy Creepy Pants

We’re currently putting the finishing touches on some illo’s we did for the creepy children’s mystery “Puppet Master” by Joanne Owen. It’s about a kidnapped girl, an astronomical clock and the world of marionettes. It will be available this Spring, but only in the U.K. (for now). Here are a few illos. Hope all is well with everyone.

Long time no see

Hello All,

Sorry for the absence, but we've been hunkered down in the studio. I did want to pop out for a second to show you a few things we've currently finished.

The first is a piece for The New York Times. The article is about the current trends of Organic Cosmetics. Click here to read the article.

The second is a set of illo's we just finished for Seattle Metropolitan Magazine's Urban Brawl section. The question posed, "Do we need a watchdog to mind the media?."

Anywho, we have to go back inside now.

Illo's from The Vault for the Village Voice

A series of Illustrations for an article about The Vault, a mafia-run club in the meat-packing district of NYC. Due to an "accident of geography", wherein the D.O.T. had decided the locale was to be condemned in favor of street expansion, the clubs owners were able to sell everything within the space to the state, as long as it looked permanent. After nailing everything to the floor and placing their own price tags on crude, custom-built items, they came away with $1.8million in taxpayer money.

PYBOT: Editorial

We got a call from The Village Voice last week to create a spot illustration for an article on the translation of Robert Walser's 100 year old novel The Assistant. So we did it.....and here it is. Click here to read the article.

SFG: smack dab in the middle

Here is a snap shot of where I currently am with Jeff's Illo. We've moved forward, but only about an inch. Since Jeff is king, we brought in the whole "king of the mountain" shtick. And to play along with his intellectual prowess, we're using a chess piece for his house..... Tune in next week for the possible recreation of Jeff's torso.

Jeff: Part 2

Milton Glaser put it best...he explained that an idea should start blurry (sketch) and slowly come into focus (final). Once we have the sketch complete, we begin our search for images and textures that we might apply to Jeff and his surroundings. Photos, engravings, scanned corn stalks are all fair game at this point. As we begin to gather "Stuff", we start loosely placing things into the illo. Lets throw some brains on the plants...how about some type? What's his cape texture? Those brains need something else....is his skin too light? I like the sketchiness of his face...maybe it should be a bit more polished?

PLEASE EXCUSE OUR MESS, WE ARE CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION!

Jeff: Part 1

Better late than never....We've been working on last week's challenge "Jeff" and we decided to record our process visually and verbally on our blog.

The first step...the concept. Lets see....Brain child? Interesting....lets go with that. We'll start with Jeff. Add some protective phalange coverings (aka sister's designer yellow mittens), a king's crown, some goofy teeth, a hero's cape (aka an old moth eaten table cloth found in one of grandma's antique rotting dressers), oh yes, and some weird brain foliage sprouting from Jeff's fertile noggin.
