Gung Hay Rat Choy

So, I thought I would do something a little different to mark the big day: February 7th is the beginning of the year of the rat in the Chinese zodiac.

Legend has it that as the Buddha lay on his death bed, he called for the animals of the forest to come and bid him farewell. The cat asked the rat when they were to leave for chez Buddha, but the rat fed the cat a line of b.s. and left him napping. Then the crafty rat hitched a ride across the river on the ox, and as they reached the shore he made his way up to the horn, jumped off, and made it to the Buddha first. Thus, the year of the rat is the first in the zodiac cycle, and the cat, who slept through the whole thing, is destined to chase the rat forever.

I suspect this may also be the origin of the term “rat bastard”.
