Dhole!

I've been going back and forth lately with iStock on a series of images, doing a lot of digital work. I finally got a few images accepted, after jumping through a few technical hoops. It's time for something different. This week, I decided to get a bit old skool and exercise some basic drawing muscles for a bit. Once again, I've looked to my children's wonderful library for inspiration. This is nice relaxing play that was most needed after a few busy weeks.

This was a demo piece that I did in a video for SCBWI - WA a week ago that showed how I did the art for Super Alphabet... now I'm thinking that a sequel is a doable.

This is by no means a comprehensive product/app review, but i just got a Kindle Fire and quickly loaded it with Autodesk's SketchBook Mobile. Above is one of the first drawings that I did on the device in a style I use for my iStock illustrations. I wanted to see how it stacks up to my previous pen and paper approach. Right away I started experimenting with the layers feature and different textures. I also added color right away (something I usually save for AI Illustrator). Over all, I"m really impressed with the app's features and control system. I miss not having pressure sensitivity and instant line variation but am finding quick workarounds. The ability to create layers is awesome. After playtime, I exported a PSD and emailed it to myself (still trying to find a cord to connect the thing directly). It exported at 600 x 1024 with all the layers intact. Very nice.

Once in Photoshop, I realize that the resolution is a little lower than I like. I'll have to draw bigger and split things up into different files I think to achieve what I'm looking for, but most of my line work stood up well. I flattened the layers and then sent it over Illustrator for vector conversion. Here's where drawing bigger will work better. The lines and angles are a little more chunky than I like but with a few adjustments to my setting I get close to what I'm used to. Also the colors I used in Sketchbook confused the conversion process. After removing the color in Photoshop and reimporting, I was able to capture the line art more easily. After that it was back to my previous system of coloring.

Here are the results.

Let me know what you think. Do any of you use a tablet to create with? I'd be interested to hear about your set up and experiences.

Drawing the line…

Not so long ago a stash of old 2000AD megazines crossed my path... all of them full of outstanding artwork. In amongst them was a Sci-Fi Special from 1985 which has an interesting comparison between computer generated and hand-drawn artwork. You can see some larger images on my site: http://www.albinal.com/wp/2012/05/drawing-the-line/

Animals in Alphabet

I haven't posted in so long! There has been so much going on my head has been spinning.

Most recently the Letters, which I posted the E of a while back, finally have a complete set! In that post I had the idea this would be done in 2010. . . not so much but, 2012! We made it!
I now have the letters as an offset printed poster available at my etsy store and possibly for sale at other sites. Keep up with my blog to see where and when you can get posters at discounted prices.

Blue Shadows
Digital Limit Ed Prints, 2011
160x130cm, printed by the Fire Studio here in Dublin,
The work is just back from the exhibition in Waterford and now for the first time is in my studio.
The Waterford exhibition ended last Saturday. It lasted bit more than 3 weeks and we managed to sell 8 out of 22 works.
We were delighted with the gallery, the works, the people, the city, the catalogue, the selling and really everything
My studio now looks certainly bit smaller but also much more colorful!
Back in December or early Januray 2012, Blue Shadows before was exhibited at the Copper House Gallery, Dublin.
Italian painter Enzo Cucchi uses to say that paintings have feet and can travel a lot, so let’s see where Blue Shadows will go next, if anywhere!
