It's a Spaced Thing

Just felt like drawing this last night before calling it quits. Nothing to get excited about though. While I plan to finish Spaced Thing someday, I'm not currently working on it. Other projects are taking up my free time. Still, this was incredibly fun and reminded me why I created Spaced Thing and why I want to return to it and finish it.
By the way, as a reminder, Spaced Thing is available as a free download at The Illustrated Section. Go grab yourself a PDF copy full of whacky goodness :)

Enjoy!

Now in color!

Starting today, weekend editions of Pokeweed will be in color. BUT, the catch is, the strips will focus on an "in strip" marketing talent known as Hello Piggy. What started as a little gag within Pokeweed, has blossomed into its own power. Don't forget to check out eh BW Pokeweed strips daily here! And for all kinds of fun, like hand drawn sketch cards, visit the Pokeweed Fanpage on Facebook!

Dreadful Base Card - MFZ

Here is the coloured version of the base-card that will be included in the Monsters Freaks & Zombies sketch-card set, coming soon from Cult-Stuff. The good folks at Cult-Stuff are graciously providing Lance Sawyer and I with some free promotional space for our book, Dreadful - using this image and one of Lance's as base-cards. On the back of each of these cards will be the original Dreadful cover, with all the important information on where to go to order a copy and how to commission us.

Billy Batson

I came across an interesting blog via Twitter a few days ago. The idea behind the blog, have artists re draw their favorite comic book panels, in their style. I liked the idea so much I thought I'd give it a try. So I picked up one of my many favorite comics, my trade of Shazam! The Monster Society of Evil by the awesome and inspiring Jeff Smith, creator of the Bone series.
Then the thought hit me. I love this book from cover to back cover. It's going to be REALLY hard to choose a favorite scene to re draw. But it didn't take long. One image popped out right away in the first few pages of the book. And that's the one I used. I never thought about it much but, this scene alone is VERY powerful and telling of little Billy Batson's character.
Hope you all dig.
God bless!

I'm no Picasso or Van Gogh, but I have been known to slap around a bit of paint traditionally here and there. I was going through some older files the other day and came across a scan of this painting I did back in 2006. It was done in Acrylic paint on canvas paper. Such were the days before the digital craze took over :)

The Punisher

Fun Fact #1. I don't like The Punisher. I don't completely hate the character, I just dislike him. And I blame all those 90's comics I read where someone like Spiderman or Daredevil, or maybe even Wolverine on certain occasions would be going about their business, and suddenly, The Punisher would appear with guns in hands to pick a fight. It was never a, "Hey, Spider Man, chasing down the Lizard? Well, Let's team up and I'll help you catch him" sort of thing. It was always a shoot first ask questions later scenario. Because of that, I felt The Punisher was just... Well... A big dumb brute!
There. I said it. I got it out of my system.
Fun Fact #2. It usually happens that when I sit down and draw a character I don't like, I end up liking the character afterwards. It's a phenomenon with me. I can't explain it. Doesn't happen all the time, but most of the time.
Fun Fact #3: I kind of like The Punisher now. Go figure.

    Buy Parable!

Got to work this morning only to find my friend had laid a copy of The Parable Anthology on my desk to sign. I had not seen the final product yet. I am a stickler for quality and let me tell you, this is freakin' awesome. Printed beautiful, vibrant colors, crisp line work, awesome art. You need to buy a copy.

I posted a snap shot of the first 2 pages of Ben Avery and I's story, "The Little Debtor". The book is still $10 off til the end of January, so buy yourself and all your friends, coworkers, veterinarians, dentists, teachers, pastors, zoo-keepers, rocket scientists, loved ones, and comic geeks copies.

Editorial Illustration - The Pursuit Of Happiness

Had the opportunity to do another cover illustration for Christian Century. They actually contacted me about a concept sketch that I had done from the last assignment and thought that the idea behind it would translate well for The Pursuit Of Happiness issue. Win-win. So with a few modifications to the original concept this is the final editorial illustration that ran in January. Another reason why it's always a good idea to submit several concepts to your art directors fellow illustrators!

    A Slippery Slope

Look out! Here's a piece I did recently for the January issue of Virginia Living. It's about an awkward skier trying to woo his little lady friend. Obviously she was having none of it.

Thanks for making it happen, Sonda! You and the team did a bang-up job on the layout.

    Avatar Kinect - First Trailer!

Finally I can be a bit proud of something that I worked on at Microsoft that is actually coming to market.
I worked on this over the last 6 months on a great team.

Look at the trailer and toward the end you'll see the avatars in rooms that are outside, like, Spring summer, winter (in the video) and fall (also in the video)...... I designed all the art for those rooms. I also designed all the art for the Emotes in each room. (even for the themed rooms I didn't design.) Those are reward animations that are related to each theme.
