I scanned in a pic from my sketchbook of Hadji from Johnny Quest. I Netflixed the new JQ DVD's and sketched this out, it was fun to relive my childhood memories of watching this show. The style of the show was ahead of it's time with amazing designs by Alex Toth.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

Okay, this doesn't exactly fit the weekly theme, but, if you consider the TV show "Lassie" mixed in with Saturday Morning Cartoons, then maybe I can stowaway on the cargo train with this one... This is one of my recent pet portraits, and the theme is "Lassie" inspired! 50's - 60's Lassie, a Wonder Dog if there ever was one. But THIS wonder dog's name is Buster the CowDog. Hope you enjoy!!

Hey there sugar frostians. Here is my post for SFG's weekly challenge: Saturday Morning Cartoons. I did a portrait of Johny Quest. Those were my all time favorite cartoons. They are still good to watch to this day!

Pink Panther

The Pink Panther

The first thing I thought of when I read the "Saturday Morning Cartoons" theme was the Pink Panther. I'm not even sure now if it was actually a Saturday morning cartoon, but I am pretty sure it was…

There were a couple of things that always made the Pink Panther unique to me as a kid: the fact that he never spoke, and the awesome art style. It was so unlike any other cartoon going on at the time. The whole retro look was just super cool to me, so non-Warner Bros., non-Disney, non-Hanna Barbera. It was like it's own little universe.

Sketched this one up, scanned him in and reworked the line art & color in Photoshop. Experimented with the non-black outline, something I always intend to work with but never seem to have the guts to do when it comes down to it.

Went for the old-school Panther from the films (I think he was just in the title sequences?), complete with the kid-friendly cigarette holder and martini glass.

SFG: saturday morning cartoons

toons! gets 'em every time!
Saturday morning cartoons currently suck. Childrens programming in general sucks. The hey-day of Saturday morning cartoons was the 1960s through the 1970s. They were the times of cartoon geniuses like Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, Jay Ward, Hal Seeger and W. Watts Biggers. They were the times of voice artists like Paul Frees, George S. Irving, Mel Blanc, Bill Scott, Daws Butler, Hal Smith, John Stephenson, Alan Reed, Paul Winchell, Don Messick, Allan Melvin, Howard Morris and countless others. These were television cartoon pioneers, setting the standard that would last for decades.
Every September, the three major networks would roll out their new prime-time shows. They did the same thing for their new Saturday morning cartoons. They would have sneak preview prime-time specials on the Friday evening before the Saturday premieres. These specials, with hosts ranging from The Brady Bunch kids, Burns and Schreiber and Lee Majors, showed clips of the upcoming cartoons to kids squealing with anticipation. I was one of those anxious kids, waking up at 6:30 am on "Premiere Saturday". I was firmly planted in front of my family's TV until 1:00 in the afternoon, usually with an overflowing bowl of General Mills' "Frosty-Os" (the box featuring Tennessee Tuxedo's pal, Chumley).
I loved these cartoons so much, I had a difficult time deciding which to draw. I chose Milton the Monster, Wally Gator, Bat Fink, The Hooded Claw, The Impossibles' Fluid Man, Atom Ant, Chilly Willy and Hoppity Hooper. They sure don't make cartoons like these anymore. They, most likely, never will.

Batman Animated...

Has to be my fave cartoon series...awesomely moody, full of action and a music score to die for!

SFG: Saturday Morning Cartoons

This week's theme: Saturday Morning Cartoons

I'm not going to say I wasn't a bit influenced on this particular challenge by the work of one of SFG's newest members, Saxton Moore. Check out his site to see what I mean. Fresh interpretations of classic Saturday morning cartoon characters. Very cool stuff! Have fun with it SFG'ers!

The SFG Challenge runs Thursday to Thursday, and was created to offer every member an opportunity to stretch their creative muscles and post their interpretations on a specific theme.

Be sure to label your illustrations with the appropriate labels as well. Label your entries with your name and the challenge label, in this case SFG: Saturday Morning Cartoons.

Remember, this is a completely voluntary challenge designed solely to stimulate creativity and promote participation. Please don't hesitate to post your other work as normal.

I urge you all to check out the SFG Blank Book site if you haven't recently. There are some entertaining updates posted. The book has just left the very capable hands of Jim Bradshaw and is making it's way to Vincent Altamore. Check out the great photos and teaser images!
