Late for SFG, but early for Earth Day. Here's a quick sketch of Redi-Kilowatt. The only updating I did was giving him an energy efficient compact fluorescent bulb nose. And a belt. He looks good in a belt.

AD CHARACTER UPDATE: TONY THE TIGER

I always preferred the vintage Tony the Tiger design from the 1950s to the current brawny version. Mine ended up a weird mix of the two. Well, with a bit more blood than the usual cereal box image.

He started out cuter but after blackening aound the eyes and adding the eyebrows... well, the giggles went south. Maybe it was being poked too many times or maybe he was just having a lumpy dough day.

Character Update

This is something I did looooong ago for a news weekly in the Twin Cities. The AD asked a group of Minneapolis illustrators to interpret "Tippy" from the Draw Tippy ads for the art school which was located in St. Paul. They were doing a story about that art school. The best one was a Tippy done as seed art by a woman who always had a booth at the MN State Fair. Her version was the cover.

Interesting side note - I couldn't find this art to post, but I used the Wayback machine on archive.org to pull up one of my very first web sites.

That amazes me (and scares me a little bit) that all that stuff is floating around out there somewhere.

This was a re-design I did in preparation for an interview with a company that counted General Mills among their clients. I didn't get the job and was snubbed when I re-applied for another position.

This week's theme: Advertising Character Update

This week I challenge you to update one of your favorite iconic advertising characters and present him or her on SFG. Tony the Tiger, Mr. Bubble, The Jolly Green Giant or Wendy from the Wendy's Restaurant chain. Whoever you choose to update, post your illustrations based on the theme here on SFG within the next week. This'll be a good one! I'm excited to see what you all come up with. For inspiration there is a great book on the shelves called 'Meet Mr. Product.'
Or, for further inspiration check out fellow SFG'er, Dan Goodsell's site, The Imaginary World and click on the Tick Tock Toys link. There you'll find a virtual treasure trove of ephemera to get those creative juices flowing. Even before I knew Dan and he became an SFG member, this site was one of my favorites. It's great!

Be sure to label your illustrations with the appropriate labels as well. I prefer you label your entries with your name or screenname, and the challenge label, SFG: Advertising character Update.


By the way, I'm always looking for new and creative ideas for these challenges folks, so keep your ideas and suggestions coming in..

Remember, this is a completely voluntary challenge designed solely to stimulate creativity and promote participation. Please don't hesitate to post your other work as normal.


One last thing, be sure to check out and get involved over at the all new SFG Forum. Based on feedback from a large number of members, who stated that SFG needed a stronger sense of community, The new forum is the perfect outlet to build that community. It'll only work if you get involved though!
