Heel!

A quick little illo for a story about 'bimbo culture'.

Slightly 'noir', perhaps?

Come see me ruining perfectly good canvas!

You can't please 'em all

I was recently commissioned to do a digital caricature for a guy who came across my work online. He sent me a bunch of photos of himself that were all shadowy and atmospheric and generally designed to make him look as emo as humanly possible. So I went ahead and did the caricature and, surprise, surprise, he came back and told me he thought my drawing was too dark and scary. Although I wasn't getting paid much for the job, I went ahead and gave it one more crack--which is not shown here--softening him up and making him look about as innocent as choirboy. Guess the client didn't like that one either, because repeated attempts to contact him for payment have come back with no response. Despite that, I have to admit, I rather like my first try, and that's why I'm sharing it here with you kind folks.

E is for Eat

This is my latest illustration in my weekly children's book project I've been working on, titled Robot Alphabet. This is letter E, for Robots Eat. This is actually based on a classic poster from the mid-20th century (the original of which can be seen here). As always, if you're interested in keeping tabs on my progress, you can find my regulary updated blog here. Also, here is a link to my other portfolio site.

D is for Dive

If anybody's been following along with my weekly robot ABC book project, you might have noticed that I missed posting what should have been the letter D last week. That's because my entire family (myself included) was hit by one nasty case of the flu. Well, I'm back from death's door, and this is what would have been week four: Robots Dive. You can check out the rest of my progress at my blog, Robot Alphabet. You can also always check out other work I've done and other news-worthy events at my portfolio site/blog: Mark Hammer Designs.

Robots Cook!

Well, here we are again. This week’s addition to my weekly ABC book project is C is for Cook. I had some debate with my wife on what sort of cook I should be doing. I even briefly flirted with the idea of changing the letter C to Chop and doing a robot sushi chef, but then I started thinking about depicting “hey, kids, it’s fun to play with knives," and decided it was best to return to my original idea. As always, I invite you to check out my regularly updated blog Robot Alphabet to track my progress on my book. You can also check out my portfolio site and other blog here.

Caricatures of People You Don't Know

My boss from my day job every year organizes a 20-man golf outing. This year he asked me to help him create a new website for the outing. Instead of photos of each player, my boss asked me to do caricatures of each of them. I tried to do these quickly--about 20 minutes each--and mostly with simple graphic shapes. I have to say, I really liked how these turned out. I hope you agree.

Sneak Peek

Here's a little sneak peak of a logo I'm working on for an organization of dads who want to become more involved in their kids' lives. The guy who started the organization suggested using an eagle. After much deliberation, I decided that an eagle just didn't have the fatherly connotation I was looking for.

Wild About Harry

I've been reading the new Harry Potter book (really good, by the way). One thing that's been driving me up the wall are the number of people who want to spoil the ending for me. I've gone out of my way to avoid spoilers on the Internet, but I've still been running into people who come up to me and say "You want to know who dies?" The answer is a resounding NO! Anyway, since I've had Harry on the brain, I decided to work up my own little illustration in Illustrator.

I have a big deadline in the morning but instead I did this little vector 'doodle'.
Clearly a case of chronic procrastination...

Texture Beast

Here's one that I did a few weeks ago:

I've been using texture over my vectors for a couple of years now, so I was excited about this week's challenge. I may post more than one...

I find that texture ups the "vintage" feel that I love so much.
