Voltron Sketch Cards!

I was up til 2:00 a.m. the other night finishing up my Voltron sketch cards; a project through 5Finity Productions that I was really excited to get involved in. I was a huge Voltron fan as a kid and watched it daily and had a ton of Voltron toys, so this was exciting for me. Anyways, I did 36 total, though I accidentally destroyed one.

Made For Each Other!

Gouache (and a touch of coloured pencil!) on illustration board, 6" x 6", 2009.

Illustrated by Glen Mullaly.

After a MUCH too long absence from these here pages I thought I'd start off again by posting the front to the Valentine's Day card / illo I gave to my sweetie on Saturday. I thought robots would be appropriate as were were definitely made for each other!

This is the first fully hand-painted (as in with figures and junk - not just patterns or background stuff) illustration I've done in 20 years and the first in gouache. So I was learning as I quickly painted to get it done in time!

Popgun Plug

Pardon the plug, the promotion and pimpery ..but I've got something coming out on the comic book stands today.
Actually...it's my very first published comic book style adventure! Pretty cool huh?

It's a short story titled "Bloom", in Vol. 2 of the Image Comics anthology series "Popgun". All sorts of cool folks have contributed art and stories to it...Heck, it's even got a cover by Paul Pope!

In a nutshell, my story is about a super-powered girl shipwrecked on a hostile alien planet populated by killer robots....
Think Planet of the Apes meets The Terminator...uh...with superpowers... Yeah. :)

I've previously talked about it here and on my blog, showing process sketches, etc.. I finished it over a year ago, and 'am looking forward to finally seeing it in print. WooHoo!

Here's the official website for the book: Popgun 2

Look for that snazzy PP cover at your local comics shop & bookseller...or you can get it on amazon here.

Robots, Robots, Robots!

It's been quite a while since my last post to this hallowed hall of illustration luminaries, so I thought I'd share a few bits and pieces of mine from the new Know magazine that hits the stands this week. Above and ( in detail ) below you'll see the cover for this issue's Robot theme. This came together fairly quickly so I don't think it turned out too bad. Combination of gouache ( the blue background ) and Photoshop colouring.

Next up are a couple of details ( sorry, you'll have to pick up a copy to see the whole thing! ) from the regular puzzles and fun feature that I write and illustrate, "Know Fun". I went with a orange / yellow colour scheme on this one. The clients weren't incredibly happy but I think it worked.
That's all for Know ( I mean now! )

E is for Eat

This is my latest illustration in my weekly children's book project I've been working on, titled Robot Alphabet. This is letter E, for Robots Eat. This is actually based on a classic poster from the mid-20th century (the original of which can be seen here). As always, if you're interested in keeping tabs on my progress, you can find my regulary updated blog here. Also, here is a link to my other portfolio site.

D is for Dive

If anybody's been following along with my weekly robot ABC book project, you might have noticed that I missed posting what should have been the letter D last week. That's because my entire family (myself included) was hit by one nasty case of the flu. Well, I'm back from death's door, and this is what would have been week four: Robots Dive. You can check out the rest of my progress at my blog, Robot Alphabet. You can also always check out other work I've done and other news-worthy events at my portfolio site/blog: Mark Hammer Designs.

Robots Cook!

Well, here we are again. This week’s addition to my weekly ABC book project is C is for Cook. I had some debate with my wife on what sort of cook I should be doing. I even briefly flirted with the idea of changing the letter C to Chop and doing a robot sushi chef, but then I started thinking about depicting “hey, kids, it’s fun to play with knives," and decided it was best to return to my original idea. As always, I invite you to check out my regularly updated blog Robot Alphabet to track my progress on my book. You can also check out my portfolio site and other blog here.

B is for Blast-Off!

Hey everyone, it's week two and my Robot Alphabet book is progressing nicely. If you missed out on my earlier post, the short version is that I am in the process of illustrating my first children's book. Each week I'll be illustrating another letter until I reach the letter Z, after which time I'll be self-publishing the book. Here is B for Blast-off. Hope you like it. If you'd like to track my progress you can always check out my new weekly blog here.

SFG: Science Fiction

Howdy y'all! To put it bluntly, 2007 really sucked for my wife and I. No need to go into details, but just to put it mildly, it seemed like every day brought one more bit of bad luck our way. Through it all, the one thing that was a constant bright spot in our lives was our three-year-old Lucas. So when 2008 began and Lucas asked me to make him a book about robots, that was all the inspiration I needed to try something I've never attempted before, namely, illustrate my first children's book. It's called Robot Alphabet, and I plan on blogging about it on a weekly basis, taking us all the way from A to Z (you can find the site here: http://www.robotalphabet.com/). The fact that this week's challenge involved Sci Fi, made it seem like the perfect time to announce what I'm doing to the world. Every week I'll be adding a new illustration showing the things robots do, starting with this week's entry: Robots Awaken. I'll also be posting sketches, doodles, tutorials, anything and everything that will demonstrate what I'm doing to create this book. When it's all done, I plan on publishing it through Amazon's BookSurge. I hope you check out my new site regularly. This is quite literally a labor of love for me.

My regular website can be found here.

Renaissance Robot!

Sci Fi art is some of my favorite, especially retro. Funny I don't care to read Sci Fi anymore but the images can be very cool. I'll be posting some more Sci Fi art later today...
