Here is a tree trunk character that's been showing up in my moleskine lately. I started it in Illustrator and then headed in to Photoshop for texture.

Ok, I actually did this one back in March, but it's the most recent finished work I have, and it has in fact, never been seen online before today. If you're interested in specs, I'll post on A Certain Lack of Focus just as soon as I'm done with this post.

Intro of me.

Hey Everybody!

Just wanted to drop in and introduce myself: My name is Dane Ault. I'm a relative newb to the illustration world, and I hope to learn a lot as part of this group of awesome people.
As a way of introduction, here's the newest illo that I've finished.

My latest assignment: deadline 25.09.09 09AM

The client, a small newspaper in Norway wanted me to visualize their desire to faithfully stand up for their opinions at all times.
After some thinking I landed on the idea of this one person walking in the opposite direction to the rest of the crowd.
I often tend to use warm colors in my work, because I'm just a simple earth color liking guy.
When they first saw my illustration they really liked it. But after two hours when the the printing guys had seen it, they rang me and told me to change the colors to blue or green or something, because my red hues would not work well on rough newspaper! Just use the live color function in illustrator, they told me, and you'll do the makeover in no time.

It is probably something wrong with my illustrator skills, but I spent hours last night trying to make a decent change from warm to cool colors and I'm still not sure if it looks good or not. But I know that If they call me again to make more changes I'm going to do a Brad Holland. In one of his lectures he told us about an argue he once had with a client, and he finished his story by saying: "Finally we came to an agreement; I did not change the illustration and they did not print it".

New Work, Three up

This is a WIP of spot illustrations for Washington Law and Politics, done three up to save time. The client is happy, but I may need to revisit the center spot as it's not quite on the mark. Initial ideas were done on paper, taken into Painter, tightened up, and now the ink and color will be finished in Painter. Saving a little paper.

I'm a little embarrassed to say that I haven't posted here for quite some time - apologies Jeff - it's now time to get my backside into gear and get on with it. What better time than now - 'New Work', this is an image that follows on from an earlier piece done in March when I was wishing for a good Summer here in the U.K. as last year's was dreadful - unfortunately this year's here in the U.K. has turned out even worse...



...Here it is alongside the earlier mentioned 'Wish' image, using the wishbone from a chicken as the sandal toe post.

Trix Are for Kids

I used to think those commercials were so mean! In the second grade I felt worse for the Trix Rabbit than I did for my spelling tutor (pour kid) -- I crack me up. Now I realize those commercials were a public service announcement for the over 19 set.
