I am slowing starting on developing an actual portfolio and this is my first attempt. It's more or less a practice run and I'm both disappointed and mildly okay with the results...wheeee!
It's approximately 5X7, acrylic with some markers, on paper.

Hey, I think it's pretty cool! Would have never guessed it's your first piece in the portfolio =)

Thanks! I have been drawing/painting for a long time, but have only recently decided to illustrate freelance. Creating an official portfolio is part of the next process. Thanks for the comment!
Really nice start...Here are my thoughts (take them or burn them in a barrel)
I love the character's design & the overall layout....I think the rest of the elements need the sophistication and style that is present in your character. The tree is close, but the ground and sky/clouds don't feel like the same style. They feel like an after thought. Also, I'd concentrate on your line work. Use your character as reference. He is pretty successful. The thicks and thins of his line should be carried through everything else. Be careful how loose you get with your marker work. It needs to be more spontaneous/loose or more planned/rigid.
Basically, your illo needs another round of polish before it's absolutely marvelous....right now it's just marvelous....at least in my opinion.....and who cares what I think.....great work...keep plowing forward.
Hey Mutt! Thanks for the comments. You basically hit the mark as far as what is bothering me with this piece, I think the background is lacking and the other visual elements need to be consistent with the character.
It'll get there!
