Sorry to be serious for a moment but this concerns all of us!

Hey friends....I hope you can give us artists a hand on this issue. It is time sensitive, urgent and critical that as many people as possible speak up. The financial crisis is providing cover so this bill is able to sneak through.

Because of the scramble on the bail-out bill, this Orphan Works bill was passed in the Senate under the radar. It's about our copy rights for visual artists, writers, photographers and songwriters...anyone in the creative field. If this Orphan Works bill passes through the House , we artists will be obliged to pay Google, directly or indirectly, $200 for each piece, song, image, etc. we create in order to protect our copyright.

At this time, all we have to do is sign our work, put the date and the"circle c" and we have a copyright. If we want more protection, ie. from court costs on infringement issues, we can send our images and $30 to the Copyright Division of the Federal Government, and then we are registered.

I don't think any of us want to further enrich an huge and very wealthy company and make it easier for them to catalogue and use artist's work without their consent. As we have seen, especially in the recent weeks, the corporations (and the government in cahoots with them) have not served well for the ordinary US citizen. And, for most of us artists, our copyright is one of our most valuable assets. If we have no protection unless we pay, what for most of us, is big money for each creation, then we have no way to make a living.

Hello from Christine Marie Larsen

Greetings, everyone!

I am thrilled to be a new contributor to SFG and would like to introduce myself. I'm a freelance illustrator/artist from Seattle. I make my pictures with gouache, pen-and-ink, and the good old computer. More work can be found on my website and sketchbook blog.

JULIE NEWMAR as CATWOMAN! Old Magic Marker Painting

Here is a magic marker painting I did over 10 years ago of Julie Newmar as Catwoman from the 60's Batman TV series. Guess is was in the late '96 or so. It was inked in black first and then 'painted' with all gray tone markers from 10% to 80% gray on 11 x 17 paper. Then white paint was applied to give it a look of an old worn photo. It also added a great effect to her costume which really matches the highlights that were actually on her costume. That's one of the things I really still love about this piece. I used to do a lot of marker paintings before the digital age and Photoshop came into my artistic career. This one is still one that I like. Maybe I'll do an updated version since my skills have vastly improved over the last 12 or so.

ADAM WEST as BATMAN! Pen and Ink art!

Yes, I'm a big fan of the 1966's Batman series starring Adam West and Burt Ward! One of TV's greatest gems...especially the first season! Smartly-written for two audiences, great camera angles, set design and art direction. The movie that was made inbetween the first and second seasons was ok, and would be a five-star thing in my mind, if Julie Newmar was Catwoman instead of Lee Meriwether. She was a good fill-in, but Newmar owned the part. The George Barris designed Batmobile is still my favorite Batmobile as well. Google

Once a month or so I google my name and see what comes up. There's over seven thousand results for me. I cruise through a bunch to see if there are blog posts around the world about me that I may not know about. I always find some. I found one about me in some Asian language I couldn't descipher. What I liked was the way they took some of my images and collaged them together. It looks fantastic. Very good art direction. I thought I would post it here.

CODI - A Pen and Ink Dog Sketch!

Here is a sketch of a great little dog named Codi that I drew with pen and ink. I did this a few years ago as I dated Codi's human who was as cute as Codi was. I used Micron Pigma Pens to draw it and it's a great sketch that I still love since the hair has such a flow to it. She would actually sit and pose for at least ten minutes since she loved the attention. Now if I could only get Alfie to do that....Ha! When I think of "yummy," I think of cupcakes. I love cupcakes!

I have a bunch of button pins with my "cupcake bear" illustrations on them. From the description on my Etsy shop: The Cupcake Bear series is a bunch of quirky little bears inexplicably stuffed into cupcakes. Cupcakes and bears are two of my favorite things and I combined the two of them in this fun original design.

The sugarfrostedgoodness.com current challenge is "yummy".
For this uncharacteristically cheerful illustration, I took my inspiration from Dr. Seuss.

Here's my original story of "Mister McBaker O'Frosting Moran"
Mister McBaker O'Frosting Moran
Baked one thousand cakes and used only one pan
He concocted pink cupcakes
And yellow and blue
But he used just one pan
Not seven or two
Giant red cream cakes with sprinkles on top
A big plate of chocolatey brownies and glop
Crunch cookies and fudgy yum yummies with fudge
Six batches of rum raisin spice cinnamon sludge
A great big enormous sweet stick-ity bun
And the pans that he used only numbered to one
He mixed in the eggs and the butter and flour
And the baking was done in just under an hour
Petit fours were presented by O'Frosting Moran
And ten dozen tea cakes — all using one pan
Cakes for a birthday
Cakes for a bris
Cakes for a Christening
with a cinnamon twist
How, you may ask, could he just use one pan?
'cause there's magic in the kitchen

SFG - Yummy

I love life, and I really love cake! Some days, not necessarily in that order. I called this painting Love Layers because I've been thinking about the five distinct roles I play in my life (daughter, sister, friend, wife and mother) and how each function overlaps and influences the others in interesting ways. Somehow I manage to remain myself; all the facets of who I am shine through and help me be the person I need to be for the most important people in my life. These folks are a unique combination of the best and worst qualities I possess, which must explain why few people can make me as furious or delighted as my mom, husband and kids. Ha ha! I take responsibility for my relationships. I have learned to respond rather than react when problems erupt. I try to follow my good feelings when I make decisions; the results are universally positive. What a sweet and simple recipe for a very happy life!

Usagi Yojimbo Artwork

Usagi was a popular comicbook character created by Stan Sakai way back when. The character was a real bad ass. A lone swordsman on warrior's pilgrimage.

He was done up for a friend's birthday and was a lot of fun to do. I was short on time so the backgrounds were done quickly but I was happy with them both.








No disrespect to the original, but I created my own version of Usagi and dug how the head turned out. Hope you all like it. Until next time, enjoy!

Tea Time

My mom drinks roughly 75 cups of tea a day; morning, noon and night - tea is happening. Seven or eight cups just to get going every morning, a couple more with her breakfast pills and a vitamin. The kettle screams with alarm at the very sight of her. Water is always boiling on the stove; she's ready in the event women go into labor while they're at her house or should they request tea between contractions. It's unclear whether Mom is eating any real meals during the day. I busted Mom and Daddy parked at the end of my street a few weeks ago, nibbling Chipwiches in the car around lunchtime; she had some chocolate on her face. To date, I don't think I've ever seen anything more adorable. Mom has no idea why her stomach gives her problems, and she can't sleep for more than two hours at a clip. Every once in a while, she'll come at me with a casual medical inquiry. "Mary, did you ever get where your belly feels as hard as a rock and you have a stabbing pain down the side of your leg; then your eyes begin to burn and when you rub them, all you see is fire?" No, Mom! No, I've never, ever experienced anything like that; nor should you! "Oh, well... it's better now. I had some ginger ale and a few swigs of Pepto Bismol; then I went to church and lit some candles for you and your sister. When I got home though, I was so nauseous so I drank forty more cups of tea and had some cheddar Wispread on a cracker. And I also had some TicTacs." After Mom makes my dad's supper, more cups of tea will be prepared and nursed, until television is turned up really loud and napping starts to occur sometime in the evening. Of course, with all that noise and after all that tea, Mom will wake up often to go to the bathroom and replenish her empty bladder with more tea. She may also eat some candy and leftover chinese food. I've learned everything I know about taking care of myself from this woman. I am somewhat reluctant blogging on my mother; I'm nervous that once I start writing about her, I will never be able to stop and I might never paint again. Be that as it may, steep, savor and enjoy a piping hot cup of Mom, just like I do!

Tattoo: Hula girl

My wife is actually considering letting me get a tattoo. For the past 8 years it's been a firm "no" when I have brought it up to her. But attrition (and whining) has it's way of wearing down on her so she said that I could possibly have one as long as it was my work.

I've always enjoyed hula girls and thought I'd come up with a version all on my own. I talked to the tattoo shop today and they said the background wouldn't fly but the tikis and the girl would work out just fine. So here it is
