Deki - Change a life with a loan

I've made an animation for a charity called Deki.

Deki empower people living in poverty to create sustainable livelihoods by providing access to microloans and training.

The animation aims to explain this process and encourage people to invest a small amount of money. Just £10 could go a long way to helping a lot of different people and you can always claim it back at the end. Quite frankly it’s a brilliant idea!

Vashti Seth, Deki CEO, said “We are really pleased with the animation that Ian created for us. Ian came up with the concept and kept us informed with his progress at all times. The animation explains what Deki does in a simple and informative, yet witty manner. We have had many positive comments and use it in all our presentations, as well as on our website – thank you Ian”.

The animation was shown at a re-launch event in October. The audience that night included the new Deki patron and animation Ultra-Don; Nick Park, which is the equivalent of having Lord Vader inspect your self-made lightsaber. :-/

Penelope's Poor Choice

I've recently completed a short animation about emergency contraception. The animation aims to educate those wayward women who think it's ok to go to the accident and emergency department (usually reserved for emergencies; like broken bones and cuts!) to obtain the morning after pill.

Luckily they let me get away with doing it using some regional rap music! :-)

Comments and critcism welcome.

Mary Blair Day of the Dead

Here's my piece for
THE ICONOCLASTIC DEAD show with the Autumn Society!

We got to pick from real-life heroes (living or dead) to illustrate for our pieces.

I chose Mary Blair, because she was such an amazingly talented female artist who worked in animation! I am sure I am one of many women (and men!) working in animation today who look up to her in more ways than one : D

h2oil

hey guys, we at la moustache produced these 3 animated segments for the feature documentary H2oil. They were made using electronic oil based products to criticize the oil industry, very ironic, our lives are so immersed oil products it's daunting to get off the addiction, but we CAN

All the illustrations were done by fellow montrealer James Braithwaite

Robot Versus Rabbit

Just working on an animation project which has the more traditional painted background and characters. Which is a nice break from all the normal vector work I seem do. In fact I have an idea for a short film I may do in this style. For the process of this particular animation just I scanned the cleaned up linework and painted them in Photoshop before importing them into Flash. The animation for this project it quite limited but it seems to work nicely.

Who do you think will win in a fight between the robot and rabbit?

The mini-shows are arriving..very soon

I thought I would share with you this screen shot.

Just been working on a short 10 second short film for TAIS's (Toronto Animated Image Society) Chicken Jam and therefore finally bringing my mini-shows to the internet. This wasn't planned to be my first minishow to be released but because it is so short and the deadline is looming it looks like this one will be out first. So hopefully by the end of this week it will be finished, if everything goes to plan.
If you are already in my mailing list I'll send you all an email as soon as it's out. Otherwise you can join my mailing list here.

Black-Eyed Snakes Video - Rise Up!

For the past 11 years, Duluth Minnesota has hosted the Homegrown Festival. Originally started as a birthday party for a local dj / band member / all-around good guy, it has grown into a weeklong, areawide festival of music, arts, plays, poetry and more. A sort of SXSW for our North Central region. New this year was a Video Festival: participants drew a local band and song out of a hat and had 48 hours to make a video. Here's a link to mine for the Black-Eyed Snakes:

Black Eyed Snakes - Rise Up! from Brian Barber on Vimeo.

I snuck in a scene with Duluth's mayor, he asked me for the still image, and it's now his Facebook profile picture. Whew! I thought he might send his goons out after me. Lot's of local references in here, so if they don't make sense outside of Minnesota, I apologize.
But here's all you really need to know:
- Duluth is on Lake Superior
- Lake Superior attracts tourists
- and seagulls
- There's a bridge that has to move up and down several times a day to let boats through a canal.
- Black-Eyed Snakes are an awesome band and I was really lucky to draw that song.

Chocolate Log Minishow Update

Some of you may have noticed that the "Coming Soon" sign for the new minishow has been up for a while. Well it's still on it's way, just slightly delayed due to some commercial work (we need to pay the bills).

Anyway here is a little screen shot from one of the scenes just to show you that we are still working on it. We are pretty excited to get this finished and be able to show it to you. So I promise you we will be finished soon ;)

Nuclear Family...and you!

Hey everybody, I'm excited and thought I'd share with you all that I just finished an animation I directed for a contest sponsored by the Opie and Anthony Radio Show and the new movie Be Kind Rewind. We're currently in the running for the top two entries. I couldn't be more excited! Please check it out and if you like it, tell as many people as you can!

I directed it, animated a bit and created all of the artwork as well. I had an awesome team of animators working with me and we kicked this out in 8 days. We're all huge fans of the show and managed to have the company we work for sponsor us to work on it. I hope you like it!

Suicycle

Curiosity presents Suicycle.
A look at what goes in, what goes out, and how everything we swallow gives the environment a case of indigestion. SuiCycle is a lively, multi-textured animated short with a darkly comic style at odds with the subject matter, Suicycle—intended to play as a never-ending loop—

All the illustrations were done as animated mask shapes in After Effects.

Illustrator Animated

I recently worked with the local CW network affiliate animating loose caricatures of Regis Philbin, Kelly Ripa and Martha Stewart for a commercial promoting their programming schedule. It ain't Pixar but I did my best.
