A quick sketch for the damned

I couldn't let a character be totally deleted after being
rejected for not being cute enough.
They're back from the lands of the dead, cute as ever.

Star Wars Chibi: Han Solo

Oh you knew this one was next! What is Star Wars without Han Solo? Nothing. You can keep your Darth Vade and Luke Skywalker Father and Son drama, Han Solo is the man ;)

Nuevo Libro de Bocetos...

Just starting to do a new sketch book. This sketch book was given to me by my dear friend Karina Verdugo. Hope to record all the process and share it with you all. The idea is to us only Sharpie markers. Hope you like it.

T Cooper & Alex Petrowsky - The Beaufort Diaries

A polar bear tries to go green-in Hollywood-with Leonardo DiCaprio-in an outrageous tale that includes equally outrageous full-color illustrations.
watch the animated trailer featuring David Duchovny here.

It may sound like a familiar story-boy goes to Hollywood, boy befriends big star, boy gets almost as famous as big star, boy finds fame tricky-but T Cooper's first illustrated novel is subversively different. For one thing, the "boy" is a polar bear. For another thing, the "big star" is Leonardo DiCaprio. And together, they decide to make an action movie...about the environment.

It's a story that's both wacky and edgy, as readers have come to expect from T Cooper (Lipshitz Six or Two Angry Blondes, Some of the Parts). But in this case, Cooper has pushed the envelope even further by enlisting illustrator Alex Petrowsky to help tell the story. Petrowsky's poster-like, full color images combine photos with cartooning and painting for an arresting effect that's both wildly humorous and hypnotically otherworldly.

It is, in short, a compelling tale with an edgy charm and a persevering conscience. And it's all in a lush package, as if T Cooper's gifts for wisdom and humor and social commentary had been boiled down to their essence for a devoted following, then blown up like fireworks for a much wider audience to ooh and aah over.

more about T Cooper here, and check out Alex Petrowsky's website.
And if you like what you see go buy it at your local bookstore or online.

Star Wars Chibi: Luke Skywalker

Here starts my attempt at creating chibi versions of some of the Star Wars characters. First up, Luke!
Like all of the latest Chibi pic's, this one was sketch in Manga Studio EX, printed out and inked with my Pentel Pocket Brush.

Mork & Mindy (Minus Mindy)

Ok. There is a HUGE possibility that you may not know who this is. And that all depends on your age. But, if like me, you were watching T.V. in the 80's in your undies, then you will know who this is. Last night, while thinking of what to "chibizies" today on the Blog, I instantly thought of Mork and Mindy. I've never drawn this character and I thought it would be fun to do so. I was going to draw Mindy but, I guess I decided not to in the end.
The talented and friendly Kev Brett gave me an idea to draw all of the Star Wars characters in Chibi which I loved. So, for the next few days or so, I'll be throwing up chibi versions of the classic characters. Hopefully, it should be fun.

Cleo Book One Cover

Hi SFG! It's been a while. I just wanted to share the cover of Cleopatra in Spaaace!'s first book that'll debut at SDCC next week (afterward it'll go up for sale online).

The books will be 48 pgs and contain all of chapter 1, some extra stuff like sketches and processes, and a giant guest art gallery. It’ll debut at the San Diego Comic-Con (where I’ll be hiding behind table N-05 in the Small Press section). I’m pretty excited!

Also, Chapter 2 started a couple of weeks ago and I've been updating it in COLOR! Here are the first two pages:

GOONIES - 8 Arms To Hold You (Crazy 4 Cult 4 - G1988)

This is my piece for Gallery 1988's upcoming Crazy 4 Cult show in LA. I wanted to pay tribute to one of my all time favorite movies from 1985, the Goonies. Above you will find your favorites like Mikey, Data, Chunk, and Mouth. I also wanted to reference a deleted scene from the movie involving an octopus... All in all, I hope its good enough....

The show premiere will be tonight, hosted by Kevin Smith. Show coverage & video coming soon! Click on the postcard below for more info:

/Film has written a wonderful review of show, check it out by clicking the image below:

SpiderMan 2099

Mainly today I've been working out on nothing but layouts for the TimeFlyz book. These Chibi drawings have been done in-between layouts to kind of keep me fresh. I usually just walk away from drawing and come back with fresh eyes but these are doing the trick just fine.

Darkseid

Very inspired to continue with the Chibi drawings. Evryone that knows me knows I love drawing in this style :)
Hope you dig'.

Doom, Dr. Doom To You!

Here's another suggestion from Twitter for today's daily warm up sketch. This time the subject was Dr. Doom. Of course, you will notice he is completely different. That's because instead of taking the usual route of just drawing the character we are all familiar with, I decided to draw him with no reference at all, and try and bring something new as far as his design is concerned. And to be honest, I kind of dig' tis whole idea of redesigned Chibi versions of comic characters. May do this again some time in the future. Hope you dig'

Kid At Swimming Pool

Well, I was supposed to wait to post this on Friday for my Friday sketch thing I previously mentioned, but I can be somewhat impatient. Also, it doesn't make sense to wait till Friday to post a sketch when daily warm-up sketches are a part of my work routine. So, I'm going to dump the whole Friday sketch thing and just post like I normally do. Beats waiting around for Friday to post anything.
This was another idea suggested on Twitter for the Friday sketch. Kids at Swimming pool. I could have drawn lots of Kids at a swimming pool, but this is the image that popped in my head when I read the sketch suggestion. And I was going to add a caption, but I thought in the end it did not need one.
Sketched and inked in my sketchbook. Inked with my Pentel Pocket Brush Pen.

Your votes please...

Here's a tee design I did for Limited T-shirts. An online t-shirt shop and they let the public vote to determine which designs go into production.

So if you like this one... why not vote for it!

Thanks!

New work & news

As with a few other artists posting here, it's been WAY too long since I put anything up on SFG. But a lot has happened since then. I've recently found representation through a gallery, and I have an opening scheduled for September. For this show I've been drawing and painting dogs - all breeds, in a wide range of approaches. Here's an ink brush painting 24" x 36". Enjoy, and as always, you can see much more at my blog: http://www.halltoons.blogspot.com/

Let me hear from you!
Cheers,
-Ed

My Sister The Freak: The Comic Book

When Illustrator Dani Jones mentioned her plans to start a web comic, I was one of the many fan boys to quickly line up with excitement and anticipation to see what she would bring to the web comics table.
Once her comic, My Sister The Freak, launched, I was not only excited, but amazed at the beauty of the art and simplicity of the writing. Recently, Dani decided to print the first Chapter of her web comic. I was happy when the comic arrived at my door today.
I can honestly say, she has outdone herself once again. The comic collects the strips that appeared online and form Chapter 1, with a few pin-ups beautifully painted in the back. The design of the comic is incredibly beautiful and professionally designed. Her painted style art looks gorgeous translated from the screen to the printed page. This is a comic you can spend a few hours just drooling over the art. The writing is clear and simple. It's well written and flows from panel to panel and page to page. I was sad when I got to the end because I wanted to keep going. Well, fortunately for me, I CAN continue the story online.
I highly encourage you to pick up a copy of My Sister The Freak from Dani before she runs out. It's entirely worth it and I can't wait till she collects Chapter 2.
You can read My Sister The Freak Online here
You can order the comic here (As of this writing she has a limited amount of copies)

Frank Rain Returns!

I've made it official after last nights post about my plans with my comic strip Frank Rain. While it's not going to be set as a daily or weekly comic, I will be working on new episodes on my free time from freelance and posting them as I finish them.

Expect to see the revamped Episode one of Frank Rain relaunching this Friday, July 16, 2010. The episodes will seem familiar to those who followed the web comic in it's original launch, but will notice a few things have changed.

For one, I've decided to change the feel of the story to make it more of a fun ride. All I can say is expect the comic to be a mixture of Blade Runner and Dick Tracy. Blade Runner in the set in the future sense and Dick Tracy in the fun knock 'em out odd ball villains kind sense.

I felt the direction I was headed in with the original launch was too serious for me and I want to have fun with the relaunch and hope you will enjoy all of the changes I have in store for "The Detective With a Metal Fist And a Whole Lot of Attitude!

If you're new to Frank Rain or returning, then you can catch the episodes here.

Friday Sketch: Pirate

Well, I had a choice. Wait for next Friday to officially kick of the Friday sketch topics or, kick it off today. Being as impatient as I am, I decided for choice # 2. The first sketch topic, Pirate, was suggested by one of my Twitter followers @rmcclurkan. Inked with my Pentel Pocket Brush Pen. I tried to keep this sketchy and loose unlike my tighter controlled inking. The idea was to simply experiment with a new style of inking. It's sort of chaotic but, I really like it.

Enjoy!
